Appraisals and Estimates

The valuation of a work of art is done by comparing the main variables that influence the antiques market, they are: harmony and style, material value, subject, rarity, value, author, period, quality of execution, provenance, state of preservation …and above all the fashion of the moment.

In the course of the estimative process, both the results of the major auction houses are taken as reference for their role in recording and verifying art world transactions and the orientations of galleries for their ability to perceive trends in taste.

The elements that combine to determine the cultural significance of works of art are historical, artistic, sociological and cultural value-in fact, what happened in the field of art in Italy, France, Britain and China during the modern age radically influenced the rest of the World and is still the main reference for collectors today.

In devising an estimate it is necessary to state the purpose for which the estimate is being made; it may be, for example:

  • Of realization;
  • Of sale at auction;
  • Of purchase;
  • Of repurchase or insurance;

Substantial differences in value could be revealed among the different possibilities.

It is equally important not to leave out assumptions about market reactions to the estimate for it to be realistic and thus accepted.
